So its important to opt for better and optimal SEO techniques.

Unfortunately, there are very few hard and fast rules in opting for correct SEO techniques, that if implemented, will guarantee top search engine rankings, increased traffic. If there are, they quickly become obsolete as everybody starts doing it. As such implementing a certain generalized set of SEO guidelines that will bring in audience to the website are important. These are basically some dos and don’ts that need to be adhered to. Implementing these however won’t suddenly bring traffic and put the website to the top of the search results, but will start a process of making the website much more search engine friendly.

Do’s

Create New Content. Search engines penalize a website for duplicating content. As plagiarism rises adding fresh and keyword rich content to websites help in building visitor interest and  increase website credibility with the search engines.

Use Google Analytics. Using Google Analytics tools with advanced metrics and intelligence report features allow websites to extract relevant data. Proper analysis of the data can help websites to build a plan to increase traffic.

Perform Competitive Intelligence. Before starting a Search Engine Optimization program, browse through competing websites that appear in the top search results. Find out how and why these websites are appearing on the top of search results, the keywords, they use, age of the websites in top search engine results, no. of back links these top ranking websites have, and others.

Find Keywords. Carefully research and find out the keywords and phrases of the website using WordTracker. These keywords related to products or services on sale online will ultimately help the websites to create a proper SEO campaign.

Create Proper Title Tags. Create a short title tag for each page of website and make sure they are all different. Search engines use the information or keywords appearing on title tags, compare them to the text on that page and rank it but avoid creating title tags longer than 30 characters.

Increase Keyword Density. Write the text on webpage using the same keywords appearing on the title tag. A carefully written webpage that has repeated keywords, enhances keyword density helping search engines to take notice.

Develop Sitemap. Developing a complete sitemap of website, helps both users and the search engines as it ensures that each page of website are indexed by Google and other search engines. Make sure the sitemap is directly accessible from homepage and uses link text must be titled sitemap.html and not site-map.html.

Exchange Links. To increase link popularity of website, participate in a link exchange program. The higher page rank, the higher the rankings. Increasing the number of links that point to a website, will help give better results. Linking to websites that are in the same field or industry as your site, unless another field can be helpful to users is also important. Also, don’t link to bad ‘neighbourhoods’ or from so-called link farms or ‘free-for-all’. Carefully plan the internal links and develop effective website navigation system, implement no follows sparingly, link content to other pages liberally and use absolute links.

Implement Robots.txt File. To gain complete control over the data indexed by searchbots, implementing a Robots.txt file helps to prevent unwanted web pages from being indexed. A robots.txt file placed in the root folder of the website where the searchbots can access it easily.

Include Long Tail Keywords. Long tail keywords are more specific and can contain the name of a specific product, brand or city. Ranking for long tail keywords is comparatively easy and the rate of conversion is better than that of short tail keywords.

Maintain a Uniform URL Structure. Modify the URL structure of website to maintain uniformity and helps searchbots to understand which page it is indexing. Its easy to maintain the URL structure in dynamic websites. Blogging platforms like Wordpress provide an another option for permalinks. Customized dynamic websites can use URL rewrite in the .htaccess file for the same.

Organize Directory Structure. Don’t throw all the web pages into the root folder and don’t use too many directories/sub directories. Keep it simple and organized.

Don’ts

Don’t Use Cloaking Mechanisms. Cloaking is based on the idea of serving a unique, optimized page for the search engines, while serving a completely different page to the ‘real’ users. Most major search engines prohibit the use of such techniques and the website can be penalized or banned altogether if caught doing it.

Beware of SEO Experts. Don’t deal with those who promise number 1 or first-page rankings. There is no guaranteed number one placement. Its one of SEO’s biggest myth and misconceptions. If using some one’s service ask for referrals and don’t be afraid to ask exactly what techniques they will use to achieve a good positioning for your website. Be sure they aren’t using anything unethical and implementing all the major search engine’s rules and guidelines. All this is must apart from putting everything in writing, and before giving out cash.

Don’t Link to Low Quality Websites. Link building is a very crucial aspect of search engine optimization. Search engines consider the number of incoming links to a website as an indication of a websites popularity and gives them priority rankings. Links from authoritative and quality websites are important for better ranking on search engines. Linking to low quality websites for higher rankings can cause the credibility of the website to go down with search engines and in some cases, the website may get banned.

Don’t Use Flash for SEO. Flash websites are very eye-catching but search engines cannot read or index this type of content. A search engines spider can’t read flash content and therefore can’t index it. If it is impossible to avoid a Flash-centric website and to index them an html version has to be provided.

Don’t Use Too Much JavaScript. Searchbots are not designed to read and understand JavaScript code. If a website contains a few lines of text in the JavaScript code, chances are that searchbots will ignore the entire block of code along with the text. Same is the case with JavaScript menus. Try to keep the use of JavaScript to a minimum. However one can create an external JavaScript file if it is unavoidable.

Don’t Use Automatic Submission Software. Once submitting website to the search engines and then wait for at least 6 weeks! Don’t use software that automatically submit websites on a weekly or monthly basis, since it might penalized in the long run. Modern search engines use automated crawlers or spiders to regularly index website. In the case of DMOZ (the Open Directory Project or ODP), the wait is 8 to 12 weeks, since DMOZ relies only on volunteers to review and index a website. If the website still isn’t listed after 12 weeks, write them a friendly email explaining the problem and that it should do it in most cases.

Don’t Trust People Who Submit Website to Thousands Of Engines. There are not many search engines in the first place. There are only a handful of serious search properties to submit, and they are used by 99% of the people looking for information. Don’t waste time or money and only work with the serious search engines everybody uses.

Don’t Junk Up Your Code. Get rid of junk codes such as on-page styles, and excessive tables from your website. Keep your software codes lean and clean and validate them whenever possible.

Don’t Add Junk Links. Avoid junk links at the bottom of web pages. Footer links are great, but don’t just add junk links to pages that serve no value to visitors strictly for the SEO benefit.

Don’t Use Stock Content. Take time to develop customized content with respect to the website. Don’t manufacture descriptions unless descriptive content is added as well.

Don’t Junk URLs. Keep the URLs of your website clean and tidy without using a lot of excess variables or session IDs.

Don’t Develop Unbalanced Link Profile. Small business owners, knowing links are important start trading links with any and every website they find. Reciprocal links aren’t bad by default, but if most inbound links are the result of link trades they won’t help much. Reciprocal links should only be made with quality, relevant web sites, and should only represent a fraction of the overall link profile.
